Photovoltaic Energy and Renewable Energy Efficiency

Morocco is accelerating its shift to renewables, aiming for 52% green electricity by 2030.

Morocco is actively pursuing both photovoltaic energy and energy efficiency to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and achieve a sustainable energy future, with ambitious targets for renewable energy integration by 2030. Determined to reduce high energy import costs and pursue green development outlining a series of targets to move towards greener energy generation from wind, solar and hydroelectric sources. Morocco aims to have 52% of its electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, with a target of 10 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, including 4.5 GW from solar, 4.1 GW from wind, and 1.3 GW from hydropower.

Introduction to renewables sector

Morocco's high levels of sunshine and wind power potential, along with its proximity to Europe, offer an attractive environment for developing renewable energies and reducing dependence on fossil fuels for power generation. The development of renewable energies in Morocco is in line with both the national energy policy and the long-term objectives of 2020-2050, which complies with the Moroccan government's international commitments.

Development of Solar and Wind power

A remarkable progress has been made in the renewable energy sector with one of the largest solar parks in the world, covering an area of 3,000 hectares. As well as various complexes that use Morocco’s high levels of sunshine to its advantage, concentrating sun rays in fluid tubes, the hot liquid is then used to generate energy and many other projects have been completed.

Development of Hydrogen production

Another way Morocco is looking to strengthen its renewable energy sector, and remove its dependence on external energy sources, is through the implementation of green hydrogen production. In September 2022, Morocco launched its first green hydrogen production system as a pilot project Green Energy Park, and focuses on the production of green ammonia, green methanol and green fuels, as well as other aspects such as sustainable mobility and renewable electricity storage, using hydrogen and fuel cells.
