Morocco and desalination
Today, Morocco is making desalination a strategic priority, accelerating the construction of several large desalination plants. The goal is not only to meet household consumption needs, but also to ensure an optimal sustainable water supply for agriculture and industry. Faced with chronic drought and increasing pressure on its water resources, Morocco has no alternative but to turn massively to seawater desalination. To achieve this, reverse osmosis technology has been chosen, justified by energy constraints, but which has proven to be an optimal choice.
Italian technology to support Morocco’s strategy against water scarcity
BFC offers reverse osmosis systems, an Italian technology widely used as a desalination method for producing drinking water from seawater or brackish water. It is based on a simple yet effective physical principle: filtering water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane, which retains salts and impurities while allowing pure water molecules to pass through. In a context where conventional water resources are under enormous pressure in all regions of the Kingdom, Morocco has implemented a strategy to combat the drought it has been suffering for six years now, due to a significant rainfall deficit.
Morocco will build Africa’s only plant of its kind
The future plant, the only one of its kind in Africa, will span a 50-hectare site and require an investment of 6.5 billion dirhams. This investment will be made possible through a public-private partnership. As a reminder, Morocco currently operates 15 seawater desalination plants, with an annual production capacity of 192 million m³, and plans to build nine more desalination plants by 2030.
